Pushing increases pressure

Why Trying to Get Your Teen Back to School Can Make Things Worse

April 17, 20261 min read

This might feel hard to hear, but it’s something I see all the time.

The more a parent tries to get their teen back to school…
the harder it often becomes.

Not because you’re doing anything wrong.

But because of something most people don’t realise.

The hidden pressure

When your teen is struggling, it makes complete sense that you:
– encourage them
– reassure them
– try to get them in

But even with the best intentions… your teen can feel pressure

And when someone is already anxious, pressure doesn’t motivate them.

It overwhelms them.

The cycle that happens

This is what I call:

The Pressure → Anxiety → Resistance cycle

The more pressure they feel →
the more anxious they become →
the more they resist →

And then you naturally try harder…

So what helps instead?

This isn’t about “doing nothing”

It’s about changing the feeling underneath your response

When you’re calmer:
– your tone softens
– your approach changes
– your teen feels safer

And from that place, they’re much more able to:
👉 open up
👉 engage
👉 begin to move forward

A simple shift to try

Instead of focusing on:
“How do I get them into school?”

Try shifting to:
“How can I reduce the pressure in this moment?”

That one shift can change everything.
